Health minister, Hanoi chairman, other senior officials face discipline in test kit case

HCMC – The Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission has proposed disciplining Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long and Hanoi City Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh for their involvement in the notorious Viet A test kit price gouging case.

Tran Cam Tu, a Politburo member and head of the Inspection Commission, presided over a commission meeting in Hanoi on May 16-17 to look into irregularities that happened at the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Inspection Commission proposed the Politburo take disciplinary measures against the Party Civil Affairs Committee at the Ministry of Science and Technology of the 2016-2021 tenure, Chu Ngoc Anh, a member of the Party Central Committee, vice secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, secretary of Hanoi City’s People’s Committee’s Party Civil Affairs Committee, chairman of the Hanoi City’s People’s Committee, former secretary of the Party Civil Affairs Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and former minister of Science and Technology.

The Inspection Commission also proposed the Politburo discipline the Party Civil Affairs Committee of the Ministry of Health in the 2016-2021 tenure, and Nguyen Thanh Long, a Party Central Committee member, secretary of the Party Civil Affairs Committee of the Ministry of Health, and minister of Health.

The commission decided at the meeting to strip Trinh Thanh Hung, a member of the Executive Board of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Party Committee and secretary of a Party cell within the ministry, of all his Party posts. Hung now serves as deputy head of the ministry’s Department of Science and Technology for Technical and Economic Sectors.

Warnings were issued against Pham Cong Tac, a member of the ministry’s Party Civil Affairs Committee and deputy minister of Science and Technology; Nguyen Thien Thanh, former secretary of a Party cell and former director of the Office of State-level Programs of National Importance within the ministry; and Le Bach Quang, chairman of the Advisory Council and the Council for Acceptance of Covid-19 Test Kit Research Projects.

Nguyen Dinh Hau, a member of the Executive Board of the ministry’s Party Committee in the 2015-2020 tenure, and head of the Department of Science and Technology for Technical and Economic Sectors, was reprimanded.

Stripped of their Party membership were Nguyen Minh Tuan, former head of the Ministry of Health’s Department of Medical Equipment and Projects, and Nguyen Nam Lien, former head of the Organization Board of Ministry of Health’s Party Committee, and former head of the Ministry of Health’s Planning and Finance Department.

Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son, and Dang Duc Anh, head of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), received warnings from the commission.

Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen, and Nguyen Manh Cuong, chief inspector of the Ministry of Health, were reprimanded.
