As a technology company, Huawei Technologies Vietnam Company Ltd. integrates community activities into its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, focusing on nurturing Vietnamese tech talent. Alongside this commitment, the company also contributes to disaster relief and other social causes in Vietnam.
Supporting and encouraging Vietnamese tech talent
Huawei Vietnam’s CSR efforts frequently include organizing competitions and sponsoring Vietnamese university students to participate in international contests, aiming to encourage and develop Vietnamese tech talent.
On September 26, 2024, at the Tech4Good Asia-Pacific Awards held by Huawei in Shenzhen, China, a Vietnamese student team won first prize with their project, SkyNet—a system to aid in locating flood victims. This win advanced the team to the global finals in 2025. The winning students will also receive startup funding, a trip to China, and opportunities to engage in discussions with Huawei leaders.
Vietnam’s team included six students from four Vietnamese universities.
To compete in the Asia-Pacific Tech4Good event, the students had to clear two rounds of the “Seeds for the Future 2024” program two months earlier. Out of over 400 participants, six students were selected. In the regional finals, they competed against 24 other top teams, eventually winning with their highly applicable project named SKYNET.
SkyNet uses drones, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and AI technology to aid search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas, delivering high-resolution imaging, stable mobile data transmission, and real-time reporting. The project was developed with a focus on economic feasibility and adaptable application scenarios for future commercialization.
Macky Zhang, General Director of Huawei Vietnam, said, “The Tech4Good competition is part of the long-term Seeds for the Future 2024 program, launched globally by Huawei to provide young talent with a platform for developing technological solutions to address social challenges. The Vietnamese students’ achievement in securing the top position demonstrates their talent through the impressive SkyNet project and inspires other young talents to transform creative ideas into practical solutions for the country.”
The Seeds for the Future 2024 program marks its ninth year in Vietnam, part of a CSR initiative Huawei started globally in 2008. By 2024, the program has successfully partnered with over 500 universities in more than 140 countries, engaging over 18,000 exceptional students.
Since the program’s launch in Vietnam in 2015, Huawei has awarded nearly 180 scholarships to top-performing students from prestigious institutions such as the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the University of Science in HCMC, and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology. This annual program has become a major event for Vietnamese universities, fostering a foundation for young tech talents to engage in global innovation and entrepreneurship.
Huawei also offers Vietnamese students the chance to participate in the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024. At this year’s global finals in May, the Vietnamese team excelled and won third place in the Network Track, competing against over 470 students from 160 teams across 49 countries and territories. This marked the second consecutive year the Vietnamese team has ranked highly at the global finals, demonstrating the prowess of Vietnamese students on the global knowledge stage.
Providing VND1 billion in Yagi relief
Beyond supporting young tech talent, Huawei Vietnam has also contributed to disaster relief efforts. On September 13, 2024, Huawei donated VND1 billion to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to aid northern provinces affected by typhoon Yagi in September.
This donation was made possible by the collective efforts of Huawei Vietnam employees, who were eager to help the affected communities stabilize and rebuild. Typhoon Yagi was the most powerful storm in the East Sea in 30 years, leaving a significant impact on Northern Vietnam, causing substantial loss of life and damage to infrastructure.
In response to the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s call for support, Huawei Vietnam organized an employee donation drive. Company leaders and employees collectively raised the aforesaid sum to aid those affected by the typhoon.
At the donation event, Macky Zhang, general director of Huawei Vietnam, stated, “With 26 years alongside Vietnam, we have witnessed the devastating effects of natural disasters on millions of lives. We are committed to supporting and assisting communities in recovery. In the face of the severe damage caused by typhoon Yagi, Huawei Vietnam aims to help residents quickly overcome hardships and regain stability.”
In addition to financial aid, Huawei Vietnam also assisted its partners in restoring telecommunications infrastructure after the storm. Huawei’s engineering experts worked with local partners to repair and stabilize damaged telecom systems, ensuring safe and uninterrupted communications.
