HCMC – Durian farmers in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa are seeing a highly profitable harvest season this year, with prices reaching record highs.
In Khanh Son District, local farmers have plans to produce 17,000 tons of durian this year, an increase of 2,000 tons compared to the previous year. With prices on the rise, they are expected to earn over VND1 trillion from their durian output.
The price of Ri6 durian, a popular variety, has risen to between VND55,000 and VND60,000 per kilogram, a year-on-year increase of VND5,000 to VND10,000, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The Monthong variety commands even higher prices, with farm-gate prices ranging from VND75,000 to VND85,000 per kilogram. High-quality Monthong durian can fetch up to VND103,000 per kilogram.
Khanh Son has become a key durian growing area, said Dinh Van Dung, chairman of the district. He noted that the local government is focused on promoting organic farming practices and improving market access for farmers.
Local durian is renowned for its large size, thin skin, sweet flesh, and small seeds. The harvest season typically runs from July to late August, giving it a competitive edge in the market.
With China granting official export permits for Vietnamese durian, Khanh Hoa farmers are optimistic about future growth. The international market presents potential for local durian exports, according to Nguyen Dinh Thanh, a farmer in Ba Cum Bac Commune, Khanh Son District.
