HCMC – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has called for further efforts in animal disease control and prevention due to the high risk of disease outbreaks in domestic animals at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

As the pathogens still exist in the environment, the spread of animal diseases has become more complicated in some localities toward the end of this year.

Authorities have detected some 40 clusters of avian flu and destroyed over 93,000 infected poultry throughout the country.

Regarding livestock diseases, some 1,150 clusters of African swine fever have been found, resulting in 53,000 cattle slaughtered. Moreover, some 2,255 cattle were infected with lumpy skin disease.

Many other dangerous diseases, such as foot-and-mouth and rabies, have occurred in localities. Specifically, rabies has caused 52 human deaths.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requested the local authorities to take further measures to prevent animal disease outbreaks, speed up the administration of vaccines on domestic animals and improve the capacity of veterinary facilities.

Local authorities have been assigned to promptly report the situation of animal diseases, inspect animal slaughters and trading activities and raise awareness of animal disease prevention through meetings and radio systems.

The ministry also required the Department of Animal Health to set up teams to supervise and evaluate animal diseases and guide people to protect their domestic animals from infectious diseases.
