HCMC – The opening of the Quang Ngai–Hoai Nhon Expressway to meet the strong travel demand during the Lunar New Year holiday has been suspended even though its investor had earlier announced to put the road into use today morning.
Today afternoon, February 12, Project Management Unit 2 released a press statement announcing the suspension of traffic opening and operation of the expressway just ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.
The reason cited was that the project has not yet fully met operational safety requirements, particularly in handling potential incidents that may arise.
Previously, on February 11, Project Management Unit 2 had sent an official dispatch to Quang Ngai and Gia Lai provinces regarding its plan to open the expressway to traffic at 11:00 a.m. today, February 12, to meet the high travel demand before and during Tet.
However, during inspections and assessments of the operational capacity of the expressway, issues related to ensuring safety in operation—especially the handling of unexpected incidents—were identified, meaning the project does not yet meet the necessary conditions for traffic opening. The suspension also aims to ensure synchronized operation with other expressways and strengthen coordination among relevant parties to guarantee traffic safety.
According to the official document, to ensure safety during the operation of the expressway, Project Management Unit 2 informed Quang Ngai and Gia Lai provinces and relevant agencies of its decision to suspend the opening of the Quang Ngai–Hoai Nhon Expressway.
A specific plan will be announced once the above-mentioned issues have been resolved.
