HCMC – Over 25 tons of fish in the Ya Ly hydropower reservoir in Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province, have died, leading to an estimated loss of about VND3.8 billion for local farmers, according to local media reports.

The People’s Committee of Ya Ly Commune reported this morning, June 21, that fish in the reservoir have been dying en masse for the past few days. The dead fish belonged to four households in Cho Village, Ya Ly Commune, and were raised in 20 cages.

The mass death of the fish is attributed to a rapid drop in water levels in the reservoir, combined with heavy rains that made the water turbid, causing the fish to experience shock and suffocation.

Local authorities have mobilized efforts to help residents collect the fish and transport them for retail sale to minimize losses.

As of 3 p.m. on June 20, around five tons of fish had been sold to local households in the district. For the spoiled fish, authorities are guiding and assisting the households in selling them for fish composting.
