HCMC – German energy company PNE AG has selected a site for a US$4.6 billion offshore wind project near Hon Trau Island, off the coast of the Vietnamese central province of Binh Dinh.
The announcement was made on October 30 during the opening ceremony of PNE’s representative office in the province.
The 2,000-megawatt wind farm is projected to produce around 7.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, developed in three phases, with each needing an estimated cost of US$1.5 billion.
PNE’s Executive Vice President Thorsten Fastenau highlighted that this project stems from nearly five years of cooperation with Vietnamese authorities, saying, “We believe this project will be a symbol of Vietnam-Germany collaboration in renewable energy.”
With the backing of Binh Dinh Province and relevant ministries, PNE aims to complete the project by 2030.
PNE’s chairman, Per Hornung Pedersen, recently visited the area with local officials to finalize the site, which lies approximately 10 kilometers offshore from De Gi fishing port and 30 kilometers from Phu Cat Airport.
Pham Anh Tuan, chairman of the Binh Dinh People’s Committee, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to benefit both the province and PNE. He also expressed hopes that Germany’s ambassador to Vietnam, Helga Margarete Barth, would continue supporting the project’s smooth progress.
On the same day, Binh Dinh Provincial Party Secretary Ho Quoc Dung met with Ambassador Barth to discuss the province’s goals. Dung emphasized Binh Dinh’s ambitions to leverage its resources to develop a high-value economy and become a prominent industrial and service hub in the south-central coastal and Central Highlands regions by 2030.
He also sought Barth’s support in strengthening local partnerships with German regions and attracting investment across sectors such as renewable energy, manufacturing, and logistics.
In 2020, Binh Dinh allowed PNE AG to conduct a year-long survey to explore wind energy potential in some areas off the provincial coast.
