Rosatom pledges support for Vietnam’s nuclear energy development

HCMC – Rosatom, a Russian state-owned nuclear energy corporation, has pledged to transfer technology, localize the manufacturing of nuclear components, and support the development of Vietnam’s nuclear science and nuclear industry.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 11 held a phone call with Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (Rosatom), to discuss cooperation in developing the nuclear energy industry, including Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant.

The Government leader highlighted Russia’s and the former Soviet Union’s significant contributions to Vietnam’s energy sector, particularly the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as in training generations of leading scientists and experts

He called on Rosatom to continue its cooperation and support for Vietnam in several strategic priority projects, including Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant and the nuclear science and technology research center, with a focus on resolving outstanding issues to swiftly sign intergovernmental agreements and arrangements for project implementation.

The PM also urged Rosatom to cooperate in human resource development, enhance governance capacity and state management in the field of nuclear energy, and invest jointly with Vietnam in other key nuclear energy applications serving public needs, such as nuclear medicine and irradiation.

Likhachev said that Rosatom is committed to strengthening cooperation with Vietnam to translate high level agreements between the two countries into concrete outcomes.

The corporation will transfer technology, localize nuclear products in Vietnam, and support the development of the country’s nuclear science and nuclear industry for peaceful purposes and socio economic development.

In addition, it has committed to working with Vietnamese partners to build a nuclear power plant using the most advanced technologies, along with several other projects.

He also expressed strong agreement with the Prime Minister’s proposals to resolve existing bottlenecks, and said that Rosatom would soon send a working delegation to Vietnam to engage directly with relevant partners and promptly implement the cooperation items as outlined by Vietnam’s PM.
