For a tech giant like Huawei, business sustainability goes hand in hand with community development. Soon after setting its foothold in the Vietnamese market, the local subsidiary of the Chinese corporation has launched numerous community programs to implement its corporate social responsibility (CSR) mission, the latest of which being its involvement in the fight against Covid-19.
Equipment for hospital
Huawei Vietnam Co. Ltd., in June handed over a set of teleconferencing equipment and 20 special-use computers worth VND1.5 billion to the Hanoi-based Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases to assist specialists there in the fight against Covid-19.
The donation, says a leader of Huawei Vietnam, shows the company’s gratitude towards doctors and healthcare workers at the hospital for their relentless efforts in fighting the pandemic to keep the community safe. The new gears will help the hospital in promoting distant training, and enhancing the hospital’s efficacy in the control and prevention of diseases.
The Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases is the country’s top-notch establishment for treating contagious diseases and is the leader in helping other hospitals in fighting viral diseases. Le Van Dung, deputy director of the hospital, says that in the fight against Covid-19, the hospital has manifested its leading position, treating more than half of the country’s Covid-19 cases, besides providing quarantine services for thousands of others.
The hospital leader highly appraises Huawei Vietnam’s donation, saying, “The equipment donated by Huawei Vietnam has enabled the hospital to improve its communication with other healthcare facilities in the fight against the pandemic, assist hospitals in other provinces and cities in training, and to efficiently coordinate with the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.”
Ma Yunhui, deputy general director of Huawei Vietnam, reveals that the set of equipment donated to the central hospital has been in use in over 100 countries worldwide. “Huawei believes that these products and solutions will help hospitals and doctors enhance their effectiveness in the fight against diseases, contributing to the final victory over Covid-19,” he remarks.
Scholarships for students
Support for education is another respect in Huawei Vietnam’s CSR activities. Just a fortnight ago, the company launched the “Telecom Seeds for the Future 2020”, benefiting excellent students majoring in ICT at universities and education institutes in Vietnam. The program, says the company, is part of a global drive by Huawei to support ICT students.
As of last year, Huawei had collaborated with over 500 higher-education institutes in 126 countries, benefiting 30,000 students, including 5,770 students chosen to further their studies in China.
Due to the Covid-19 disease, this year’s “Telecom Seeds for the Future” program is limited to distant learning, with 50 Vietnamese students chosen for the program. Learners will have opportnities to acquire advanced knowledge in sophisticated tech fields such as 5G, cloud computing, and Internet of things among others during a web-based workshop from August 24 to 28.
In fact, the “Telecom Seeds for the Future” program has been introduced in Vietnam since 2015. A total 42 outstanding Vietnamese students have benefited from the program, which according to Huawei Vietnam is a contribution to the local ICT community where the company operates.
Huawei, which first operated in Vietnam as a supplier of base transmission stations before expanding business scopes to supplies of mobile equipment devices for consumers and information technology solutions for enterprises, has also launched other activities for schools in Vietnam.
Last September, the company donated furniture and office equipment for schools and ICT associations to support ICT training and startup incubation. Specifically, Huawei Vietnam donated furniture and equipment worth VND45 million to Vietnam Software and IT Services Association, and VND200 million worth of similar items to an IT application center under Vietnam Digital Communications Association.
Grade schools in the country have also benefited from Huawei Vietnam’s CSR programs, including 35 sets for chairs and desks for Phu Dong Elementary School in Phu Yen Province, and a computer lab for an elementary school in My Luong Commune of Phu Tho Province’s Yen Lap District, plus 15 sets of computers for teachers at this latter school. These donations were made last year, on top of a similar program for five schools in five other provinces in 2018.
To date, Huawei Vietnam has donated over 300 computers for schools across the country as part of the company’s CSR activities.
