HCMC – The police in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang have detained three individuals in connection with 79 illegally-constructed villas on Phu Quoc Island.

The island authorities recently dismantled two of the 79 illegally-built villas on 18.9 hectares of State land in Duong To Commune.

This action came after the local authorities had not been able to convince the investor to restore the former status of the land.

The government of Kien Giang handed over land to Duong To Commune for management. However, the area was gradually divided into 350-500-square-meter lots for sale during a land fever on Phu Quoc in late 2018.

The transactions were mostly carried out without official certification by the local authorities.

In the last two years, developers have stepped up the execution of their projects.

The Kien Giang Province People’s Committee has worked with investors to tackle their breaches of land rules.
