HCMC – Tran Thanh Man has been sworn in as chairman of the 15th National Assembly (NA) as he won 100% of votes in the NA Chairmanship election today, May 20.
With 475 out of 475 NA deputies present at the seventh sitting of the legislature, which opened today in Hanoi, voting in favor of Tran Thanh Man, the NA passed a resolution on his election to the chairmanship of the NA for Tenure XV in 2021-2026.
Man is a 62-year-old native of Hau Giang Province. He had held various leadership roles within the NA and the Central Committee of Vietnam Fatherland Front.
Man’s predecessor, Vuong Dinh Hue, was relieved of his position late last month.
The NA is also expected to elect a new State President, with General To Lam, minister of Public Security, nominated as a candidate. This process is expected to be completed by the morning of May 22, according to NA Secretary General Bui Van Cuong.
In addition to the election of key leadership positions, the NA’s seventh sitting will deliberate on 10 draft laws, three draft resolutions, and 11 bills seeking feedback. Among the key legislative items are amendments to the Social Insurance Law, the Capital Law, and the Organization of People’s Courts Law.
Lawmakers will address the implementation of development plans and the State budget performance in 2023 and the first months of 2024.
Discussions are expected to cover critical projects, including the North-South Expressway and the national program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
The sitting is divided into two sessions, with the first running until June 8 and the second from June 17 to 28.
