Typhoon Yagi leaves at least four dead, 78 others injured

HCMC – Typhoon Yagi, the third to hit Vietnam this year, had left at least four people dead and 78 others injured as of 5 p.m. today, September 7, according to the local media.

Three of the deceased are from Quang Ninh Province and one from Hai Duong Province. Out of the 78 injured, 58 are in Quang Ninh and 20 in Haiphong City.

Five ships and a small wooden boat sank in Quang Ninh, while a cargo ship in Haiphong broke free from its anchor and drifted away. The provinces of Quang Ninh, Thai Binh, and Hai Duong experienced widespread power outages.

Data from the electricity authority showed that Quang Ninh saw 14 transformer stations of 110KV detached from the grid, and 84 medium-voltage power transmission lines disrupted. And more than 274,000 customers were affected by power outages.

In Haiphong City, initial data indicated, six 110KV power lines were impacted, leading to a blackout on Cat Hai Island. More than 300,000 clients were affected by the interruptions of 50 medium-voltage power transmission lines.

Many houses were damaged, roofs were blown off, and thousands of trees were uprooted in the provinces and cities of Quang Ninh, Haiphong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, and Bac Giang.

Specifically, 67 trees were uprooted, and one house unroofed in Hanoi. Hung Yen lost over 2,900 hectares of rice and crops, and 42 houses had their roofs blown off. In Thai Binh alone, more than 1,000 trees were knocked down, 17 power substations were damaged, and 20 households were affected.

On the evening of September 7, the typhoon swept through Hanoi, with wind speeds at levels 12-13 and gusts reaching level 15.

To respond to Yagi, the authorities have mandated strict enforcement of the sailing ban. Residents are not allowed to return to fishing boats, cages and rafts during the storm’s landfall.

A strict road closure is also enforced along coastal areas until 8 p.m. and in the Hanoi area until 10 p.m. on September 7.
