HCMC – Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved a long-awaited project to widen an oft-congested section of the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, with Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) assigned to oversee the implementation of the project.

The Ministry of Finance has proposed allocating funds from the state budget for the VND15.3 trillion project and directed VEC to review and finalize a financial plan and an execution schedule for widening the 22-kilometer HCMC-Long Thanh section of the expressway, with substantial completion slated for next year.

VEC has been requested to select qualified and reputable contractors in line with regulations, and to ensure that the project is implemented on schedule, with quality, efficiency, and transparency.

Earlier, Project Management Unit 7 proposed expanding the expressway section between the Beltway No. 2 interchange in HCMC and the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway interchange in Dong Nai Province.

Under the proposal, the elevated section from Beltways No. 2 to No. 3 would be widened by 7.75 meters on each side, doubling the number of lanes to eight.

From Beltway No. 3 to the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway interchange, the road would be expanded to 10 lanes. Each side of the roadway would be widened by 11 meters, bringing the total roadbed width to 49.5 meters.

The elevated section would also be widened by 11.5 meters on each side, resulting in the total width rising to 49.5 meters.

A new bridge will be built in parallel with the current Long Thanh Bridge. It will feature five lanes, including an emergency lane. The existing bridge will retain its current configuration of four lanes.

The expressway expansion project is scheduled to get off the ground in the third quarter of this year and to be substantially completed in 2026.
