Vietjet aircraft skids off runway in HCMC

Must read

HCMC – A Vietjet Air passenger plane skidded off a runway as it landed at HCMC-based Tan Son Nhat International Airport yesterday afternoon, June 14, without injuries being reported.

Vietjet said the aircraft, which departed from Phu Quoc island off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, skidded off the runway into a grass field at 12:24 p.m. due to heavy downpour and strong wind.

The flight crew, all of the passengers and the plane are safe, the local low-cost carrier confirmed.

Vietjet and competent authorities at the airport were handling the situation.

The incident had affected many flights and prompted the airport to briefly suspend operations. Local media reported roughly 200 flights were affected by the incidents, including 165 flights by Vietnam Airlines and 25 by Bamboo Airway.

Notably, the runway in this incident is the only active one at the airport, which has two runways. The other one is temporarily closed for upgrade.

The runway remained closed until 5 p.m. on the day. All landing and taking-off activities have been affected, said a Southern Airports Authority representative.
