HCMC – The first national standards for adventure tourism, specifically hiking and trekking, has been introduced to ensure the safety of participants and guides.
The new regulations have been announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology following the proposal of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the appraisal of the National Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality.
Consequently, for the first time, adventure tour operators must comply with strict criteria regarding route classification, equipment safety inspections, and mandatory risk disclosures to all involved parties.
Under these standards, providers are held strictly accountable for the professional competence of their team leaders and assistants. Operators must maintain detailed records of staff training and ensure that third-party services – such as transport or equipment supply – meet the same rigorous safety requirements.
Additionally, the regulations mandate that weather forecasts and environmental hazards be evaluated before any activity begins, with a focus on preserving local ecosystems and minimizing social impacts on visited communities.
The standards also introduce specialized planning for vulnerable groups, including children and persons with disabilities, requiring tailored equipment and expert supervision. While the current scope excludes auxiliary services like catering and accommodation, it sets a clear benchmark for the design and execution of adventure products.
