HCMC – Vietnam and South Korea have discussed strengthening collaboration in energy and industrial development, with a focus on renewable and nuclear power.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy Ahn Duk Geun in Seoul on February 25 to explore cooperation in expertise sharing, financing, and technology transfer for nuclear power.

Vietnam aims for double-digit economic growth by 2030 and plans to expand its electricity generation capacity to 150 gigawatts by then.

Dien welcomed foreign investment, particularly from South Korean firms with nuclear expertise. He also met with executives from major South Korean energy companies, including KEPCO, Doosan Energy, POSCO E&C, and LS Eco Energy.

South Korean businesses have also expressed interest in Vietnam’s rare earth sector, which has total reserves of an estimated at 22 million tons—the second largest in the world. With shifting global trade policies, they see potential in diversifying supply chains and securing key materials for advanced technologies.

LS Eco Energy Chief Executive Lee Sang Ho said the company plans to expand its involvement in permanent magnet technology and collaborate with Vietnamese partners on nuclear energy projects.
