HCMC – The Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) has agreed with a proposal to arrange a four-day continuous holiday for the New Year through a workday swap, lending further support to the plan under consideration.

In an official document signed on December 24 by VGCL Vice President Ngo Duy Hieu and sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the labor body said it supports the proposed holiday arrangement after consulting workers and trade union officials nationwide.

According to the VGCL, an online survey was conducted among workers and union officials, with 25,154 people taking part. Of these, 63% expressed support for the proposed workday swap to extend the 2026 New Year holiday.

Based on the poll results, the VGCL said it agrees with the proposed New Year holiday plan, which would allow civil servants and public employees to take four consecutive days off.

Under the proposal, public sector employees would observe the statutory New Year’s Day holiday on January 1, 2026, take January 2 off, and work an additional day on Saturday, January 10, as a make-up working day. If implemented, the arrangement would create a continuous holiday from Thursday, January 1, to Sunday, January 4, 2026.

For employees in the business sector, the VGCL encouraged employers to apply a similar holiday schedule where feasible, while ensuring full compliance with labor regulations and prioritizing agreements that are more favorable to workers.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs had sought feedback from ministries, agencies and relevant agencies on the proposed New Year holiday plan for 2026, covering civil servants, public employees, and workers in administrative agencies and public service units.
