HCMC – Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the U.S. decision to impose a 46% reciprocal tariff on its exports to America.

The tariff does not reflect the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, stability, cooperation, and development, said Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If enforced, it would negatively impact bilateral economic and trade relations as well as the interests of businesses and people in both countries, she added.

The spokesperson noted that Vietnam has actively engaged in recent discussions with the U.S. side to address concerns, strengthen bilateral economic and trade ties, and promote fair, sustainable, and mutually beneficial trade.

Vietnam will continue to coordinate and engage in dialogue with the U.S. in a constructive and cooperative manner to seek practical solutions that contribute to the stable and sustainable development of bilateral economic relations, serving the interests of both nations’ people and businesses.

In the early hours of April 3 (Vietnam time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced the 46% reciprocal tariff on all imports from Vietnam, which is expected to take effect on April 9.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called a Cabinet meeting with key ministries and agencies to evaluate the situation and discuss both short-term and long-term responses. He called for the immediate formation of a rapid response task force on the matter, headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.

He also assigned Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc to lead and direct relevant ministries and agencies in gathering feedback from businesses, including major exporters. Deputy PM Phoc is scheduled to visit the U.S. and Cuba during a working trip from April 6 to 14.
