HCMC – The Binh Hung Wastewater Treatment Plant, the largest of its kind in Vietnam, was inaugurated in HCMC this morning, August 30, with a daily treatment capacity of 469,000 cubic meters.

This facility belongs to the VND11.3-trillion second phase of HCMC’s water environment rehabilitation project, funded by Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) loans and Vietnam’s reciprocal capital.

Luong Minh Phuc, director of the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of HCMC (TCIP), said that the plant in the second phase handles 469,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, 328,000 cubic meters higher than in the first phase.

The plant will treat wastewater from over 2,500 hectares in districts 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and Binh Chanh, helping to mitigate environmental pollution in the Tau Hu-Ben Nghe-Doi-Te canal basin, and thus benefit around 1.8 million residents.

HCMC has two other wastewater treatment plants – Tham Luong-Ben Cat (131,000 cubic meters per day), and Binh Hung Hoa (30,000 cubic meters).

With the expansion and operation of the Binh Hung facility, the city’s combined wastewater collection and treatment capacity has risen from 20.6% to 40.8%. By 2025, this capacity will edge up to 71.3% when the 480,000 cubic meters/day Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant in Thu Duc City becomes operational.
