HCMC – Vietnam’s seafood exports last month grew by 3.3% year-on-year to over US$774.3 million, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Despite the impact of the recent Lunar New Year holiday on export activities, the sector showed positive performance, led by shrimp exports, which brought in US$300 million, accounting for 39% of total seafood exports.

Experts note that the global shrimp industry is rebalancing, with production slowing in key markets, leading to gradual price recovery. This is particularly evident in the U.S. and the EU, where demand is rising.

However, China, one of Vietnam’s key shrimp markets, is seeing a decline in demand as the middle class adjusts spending habits amid economic pressures. Growing competition from low-cost seafood and shifting food preferences may further affect Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the near future.

Vietnam’s tra fish exports faced continued challenges, with revenue reaching US$123 million, a 25.3% drop. According to VASEP, while demand from China and the EU remains stable, factors such as a shortage of fingerlings and anti-dumping duties could hinder further growth.

Tuna exports fell 17.7% to US$65.26 million. Despite the decline, steady demand from the U.S. and the EU presents opportunities for recovery, particularly as new U.S. tariff policies may enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese tuna.

Vietnam’s seafood exports in January showed mixed results across markets. Exports to China and Hong Kong surged by 64.9%, while shipments to the U.S. and the EU declined by 16% and 17.6%, respectively.

Exports to ASEAN markets grew 10.5%, signaling promising opportunities. In contrast, declining consumption in the Middle East and other regions is prompting domestic businesses to adjust their strategies.
