HCMC – The government of the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on June 4 issued an order suspending the operation of food stalls, eateries and coffee shops along National Highway 1 in the province until further notice to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The decision came as new Covid-19 cases were still detected in several southern provinces and cities, including HCMC and Long An.

Along the section of National Highway 1 in the province, there are many food stalls, eateries and coffee shops which see a number of guests traveling from HCMC to the Mekong Delta provinces and cities stop there to rest and for a meal, posing a high risk of Covid-19 infections.

On the same day, Cai Lay Town in the province asked residents to avoid gatherings of over five persons outside workplaces, schools and hospitals, apart from temporarily shutting down coffee shops and food stalls. The residents were also told to cancel parties and meetings.

Earlier, Tien Giang Province suspended passenger transport services from and to HCMC and other Covid-19-hit provinces.

Besides, the province has set up four coronavirus checkpoints in Chau Thanh and Cho Gao districts and Go Cong Town to check the body temperature of people entering the province to promptly detect Covid-19 cases.

The HCMC Center for Disease Control this morning, June 5, reported 16 suspected Covid-19 cases, mainly linked to the Revival Ekklesia Mission cluster in Go Vap District.

Among the suspected cases, 15 people were quarantined after they came into close contact with Covid-19 patients, posing no risks of community transmission.

Another suspected case was detected while the person visited a hospital for a medical checkup. The competent forces are investigating to find the source of the infection, the local media reported.

Since May 18, HCMC reported 323 domestic Covid-19 cases, putting it fourth among the localities reporting the large number of locally-infected Covid-19 cases in the latest wave of the coronavirus, after Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Hanoi City.
