HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has proposed to the prime minister an adjustment in the investment policy for the Long Thanh International Airport project, suggesting rescheduling the completion of the first phase to 2026 rather than next year as originally planned.

The ministry explained that incorporating the construction of runway No. 3 into phase 1 of the project has impacted the overall timeline as it requires changes to Resolution No. 94/2015/QH13 by the National Assembly, which will also modify the scale of the first phase.

The ministry estimates that building runway No. 3, initital planned for phase 3, will take around 24 months after receiving approval from the relevant authorities. If the National Assembly grants approval at its final session this year, the construction of the runway could be completed by the end of 2026.

Moreover, the delay in phase 1’s completion is also attributed to extended regulatory procedures, according to the ministry’s proposal.

Long Thanh International Airport’s first phase began on January 5, 2021, with an original target for operation by 2025. Once completed, the airport will have a capacity of 100 million passengers and 25 million tons of cargo per year, making it the largest airport in the country.
