HCMC – Starting March 1, 2025, Vietnam will end its three-year registration fee exemption for new electric vehicles (EVs), requiring buyers to pay a reduced registration fee for the next two years.

The change follows Decree No. 10/2022/ND-CP, issued by the Government on January 15, 2022, which set a 0% registration fee for EVs from March 1, 2022, to February 28, 2025.

From March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2027, the registration fee for battery electric vehicles will be 50% of the rate applied to gasoline and diesel vehicles of the same seating capacity, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Currently, first-time car registration fees in Vietnam range from 10% to 12% of the vehicle’s price depending on location. This means that EV buyers will soon pay a registration fee of 5% to 6%, whereas they were previously fully exempt.

For instance, an electric car priced at VND1 billion will come with an registration fee of VND50 million to VND60 million depending on location.

Industry analysts warn that ending the exemption may slow the growth of Vietnam’s EV market, as higher upfront costs could deter potential buyers. The policy shift is expected to impact demand after March 1, as consumers factor in the additional expense.
