HCMC – Danang City has approved an investment plan for the VND45.2-trillion Lien Chieu container port project, with construction scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2025, reported local media.

The project will be developed through a bidding process to select investors. It aims to build a modern container port that meets green port standards and serves as an international transshipment hub, in line with Vietnam’s seaport development strategy through 2030 with a vision to 2050.

Located in Hai Van Ward, the port will cover about 172 hectares and have a designed capacity of 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year, equal to 74 million tons. By 2030, annual throughput is expected to range from 14.25 million to 36.3 million tons.

The plan includes eight container berths with a total length of 2,750 meters, capable of handling ships of up to 18,000 TEUs, and a 5,000-ton barge berth to support cargo consolidation and distribution.

Supporting facilities will include warehouses, repair workshops, offices and staging areas linked to the railway system to facilitate multimodal transport.

The project requires VND9.05 trillion in equity, with the rest mobilized from credit institutions. It will operate for 50 years from the date of land or sea allocation.

Phase one, running from 2025 to 2028, will include at least two berths and key supporting infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2036.
