Gold falls, dollar steady

HCMC – Domestic gold prices fell sharply on the morning of March 30, with SJC-branded gold bars dropping by VND1.4 million per tael from the close on March 27, while the U.S. dollar price at commercial banks remained unchanged against the Vietnamese dong.

As of 8:40 a.m., major traders including Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC), DOJI and Phu Quy quoted SJC-branded gold bars at VND168.4 million per tael for buying and VND171.4 million per tael for selling, down VND1.4 million from the close on March 27.

Gold rings also declined at the opening session. Phu Quy listed plain gold rings at VND168.4 million per tael for buying and VND171.4 million for selling, down VND1.2 million from the previous session.

The spread between buying and selling prices remained high at around VND3 million per tael.

Globally, gold traded at around US$4,476 per ounce, largely unchanged from the same time in the previous session. At this level, the global gold price, converted at the exchange rate at Vietcombank, was equivalent to about VND142.2 million per tael, roughly VND29.2 million lower than domestic SJC gold bars.

Notably, silver prices also declined sharply on the morning of March 30. Phu Quy lowered silver prices by over VND1.1 million per kilogram, quoting VND68.8 million for buying and VND70.93 million for selling. Silver prices by the tael fell by more than VND40,000 to VND2.58 million for buying and VND2.66 million for selling.

At Sacombank-SBJ, silver dropped by VND48,000 to nearly VND2.6 million per tael for buying and about VND2.69 million for selling. Silver declined by VND1.28 million per kilogram to VND69.2 million for buying and VND71.76 million for selling.

Similarly, Ancarat listed a tael of silver at around VND2.58 million for buying and some VND2.66 million for selling. It fell to VND68.77 million per kilogram for buying and VND70.91 million for selling, down VND1.07–1.09 million.

On the same morning, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) set the central exchange rate at VND25,100 per U.S. dollar, unchanged from March 27.

At commercial banks, the U.S. dollar was steady. Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,105 for buying and VND26,355 for selling, unchanged from the previous session. VietinBank listed the rate at VND26,143–26,355, while BIDV quoted VND26,135–26,355 and Eximbank posted VND26,120–26,355, all holding steady compared to the March 27 close.
