HCMC – The Ministry of Health confirmed a staggering number of 94,385 new Covid infections in 61 cities and provinces on Monday, soaring by over 7,400 cases from yesterday.

Hanoi took the lead with nearly 12,900 cases, followed by Quang Ninh with 9,105, Nghe An with 3,958, Bac Ninh with 3,572, Hung Yen with 3,309 and Lao Cai with 3,233.

Besides, Quang Ninh Province added over 28,000 infections detected earlier to the national Covid case count management system.

In Hanoi, many wards have seen their Covid alert level rise from level 1 (low risk) or level 2 (medium risk) to level 3 (high risk).

Hanoi Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh said the outbreak in the capital city would peak in the next two weeks, putting huge pressure on the capital city’s healthcare system.

According to Anh, daily caseload in the city has recently exceeded 10,000 and the Omicron variant is possibly dominating Covid infections.

However, 96% of active Covid patients in Hanoi are asymptomatic or report minor symptoms and 95% are being treated at home.

“The grassroots healthcare system would face a huge challenge in the next two weeks if suitable solutions are not taken,” Anh said at a meeting of the Hanoi steering committee for Covid infection prevention and control on February 27.

The Hanoi leader asked the municipal Department of Health to set up a multifunctional team that is responsible for instructing and monitoring high-risk groups, reporting daily data of Covid patients under treatment at medical facilities, and monitoring the resumption of in-person classes.

With over 94,000 new cases recorded today, Vietnam’s Covid tally has exceeded 3.44 million since the beginning of the outbreak.

This afternoon, the Ministry of Health confirmed 108 more Covid deaths, taking the nation’s death toll to 40,252. Hanoi, Danang, Quang Nam and Vinh Phuc reported the most fatalities today.

To date, nearly 2.44 million Covid patients in the country have fully recovered, while there are currently some 3,500 critically ill patients.

The country has administered more than 193.6 million doses of Covid vaccine nationwide so far, including some 177 million doses for people aged 18 or older and 16.8 million doses for children aged between 12 and 17.
