Behind the wheel, beyond the forest: Grab’s dual mission in Vietnam

Operating under a sharing economy model, Grab classifies its drivers as partners rather than employees. As such, Grab Vietnam has continually launched initiatives to support its driver-partners—a community that now exceeds 200,000 members.

Supporting a growing network of driver-partners

From April 25 to September 30, 2025, Grab Vietnam is partnering with the VPMilk Omega brand to roll out the “Wishes Behind the Wheel” program. First introduced in 2023, the initiative aims to support driver-partners while fostering a culture of kindness and compassion in the broader community.

This year’s campaign, under the message “We need you healthy, because you are essential,” encourages driver-partners to prioritize their well-being. Grab and VPMilk Omega hope to fulfill even more heartfelt wishes—ranging from medical and educational support to vehicle and home improvements—emphasizing that these drivers are vital not only to Grab, but to their families as well.

Eligible drivers may request assistance for various needs, including financial relief from natural disasters, medical treatment for themselves or family members, regular health check-ups, and better learning environments for their children. Support is granted once per driver and is provided either in kind or via e-wallet credits. Those who have previously received aid are excluded, ensuring the benefits reach a wider circle of partners.

Since its inception, thousands of drivers nationwide have had their wishes granted through this program.

Earlier, to mark its 10th anniversary in Vietnam in August 2024, Grab launched a series of appreciation events for driver-partners. One such event was a contest titled “Collect Grab’s 10-Year Puzzle Pieces – Breathing in Sync with Vietnam.” Held from August 5 to September 1, active drivers who completed the challenge could win prizes from a pool worth VND300 million.

Another milestone event was the debut of the “Grab 10-Year Surprise Ride,” a mobile roadshow that visited 10 cities and provinces, including Binh Thuan, Thua Thien–Hue, Dong Nai, and Can Tho. The ride brought 10,000 surprise gifts and interactive activities to lucky driver-partners, including games and special rewards for high performers.

In September 2024, Grab held its annual Tech Driver Festival across Hanoi, HCMC, and Danang. Under the theme “Thank You, Driver – Our Companion on the Road,” the event offered thousands of drivers a chance to relax and recharge with haircuts, health screenings, and other engaging experiences.

Environmental commitment: forests and climate awareness

In October 2024, Grab Vietnam signed a cooperation agreement with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Thuan Province and the Foundation for Supporting and Developing Sustainable Living Community (Sống Foundation). The agreement reinforces Grab’s ongoing role in the “Forest Symphony Ninh Thuan – Planting Forests to Preserve Water” program, which has been active since 2020.

As part of the partnership, Grab and its collaborators will plant 171,010 trees and sow 150,000 seed bombs across key ecological zones: Nui Chua National Park, Thuan Nam coastal protection forest, and the Tan Giang upstream protection forest. Community training and support activities will also be implemented to enhance local capacity in forest conservation. Nui Chua was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2021.

Tran Ngoc Hieu, deputy director of Ninh Thuan’s Agriculture and Rural Development Department, stated: “Faced with climate change, Ninh Thuan is suffering severe droughts that threaten water resources and local livelihoods. The tree-planting project plays a critical role in ecosystem restoration and water conservation. We greatly value Grab’s involvement in building climate resilience and long-term benefits for our communities.”

In addition to tree-planting, Grab continues to leverage its app and communication platforms to raise public awareness about climate change. Since 2021, it has offered an in-app carbon offset contribution feature, enabling users to voluntarily offset the carbon emissions from their Grab rides and deliveries.

Users opting in contribute VND2,000 per GrabCar trip or VND1,000 per GrabBike, GrabFood, or GrabMart order. All contributions are funneled into verified carbon offset initiatives, including reforestation and forest preservation efforts across Southeast Asia, helping to improve local livelihoods and prevent soil erosion.

Nguyen Thanh Anh, marketing director of Grab Vietnam, said: “We’re seeing growing public concern for environmental issues and a strong desire to contribute. The support for our carbon offset program has empowered meaningful projects not just in Vietnam, but throughout Southeast Asia. It also motivates us to aim higher in our environmental mission. Together with our users, we are shaping a more sustainable future.”

In Vietnam alone, after three years of partnership with the Ninh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Sống Foundation, Grab has helped plant 20,000 trees in Thuan Nam’s upstream forests. These trees offer indirect benefits to hundreds of thousands of residents by mitigating wind and sand erosion and preserving vital water sources.
