HCMC – Bushfires broke out in the north-central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh due to a hot spell yesterday, June 29, destroying vast areas of the forest.

In Nghe An Province, a fire broke out in a pine forest in Dien Phu Commune, Dien Chau District, late yesterday.

“Hot weather and strong winds cause bushfires to spread very quickly,” Tuan, a witness, told VnExpress.

Dien Chau authorities sent hundreds of people including soldiers, police officers and locals to prevent the fire from spreading by creating firebreaks and using blowers. The fire was extinguished at some 8 p.m.

However, another bushfire broke out in the district’s Dien An Commune, spanning hundreds of meters in a pine forest located some half a kilometer from a residential area and nearly one kilometer from National Highway 1A. The fire was put out at some 10 p.m. thanks to the joint efforts of the authorities and locals.

Temperatures in Nghe An Province have reached 38-41 degrees Celsius for the past several days. According to the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, five bushfires have broken out in the province since early this year.

In Ha Tinh Province, a bushfire broke out near a cemetery in An Phu Commune, Vu Quang District, at some 4 p.m. yesterday and quickly spread to Son Long and Son Tra communes in Huong Son District.

The authorities mobilized some 500 people including soldiers, police officers, rangers and locals to put out the fire. However, the fire had not been extinguished as of 10 p.m. The local authorities are trying to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby pine and rubber forests.

“The bushfire was caused by people offering incense at the Vu Quang District cemetery,” said Nguyen Van Thanh, head of the Rangers Department of Huong Son District.
