Death toll climbs to 179 after typhoon Yagi strikes northern Vietnam

HCMC – The death toll from severe flooding and landslides triggered by typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam has edged up to 179, with another 145 people reported missing as of 5:30 p.m. today, September 11.

The disaster has been particularly devastating in the northern upland province of Lao Cai, where a massive landslide buried the entire village of Lang Nu in Bao Yen District.

About 500 rescuers have been searching for survivors and have recovered 34 bodies so far, according to local government.

The Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority reported that another landslide had killed 29 people and left 23 missing in Nguyen Binh District, Cao Bang Province. In the coastal province of Quang Ninh, the typhoon caused 13 deaths, including 12 due to the storm and one due to floods.

Other provinces, including Haiphong, Hai Duong, Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Vinh Phuc, and Phu Tho also reported fatalities due to a combination of factors including landslides and flash floods.
