CAN THO – Nearly 7,800 farmers have been trained in climate risk financial management under the AgriCRF-VN project, while pilot programs for agricultural insurance and green credit have expanded access to financial tools for climate adaptation.
The figures were announced at a conference reviewing the AgriCRF-VN project in Can Tho City on May 28.
Hoang My Lan, representative of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Vietnam, said the project trained 7,775 farmers, exceeding its original target of 4,000. Women accounted for more than 32% of the participants.
The project also partnered with insurers to pilot rice insurance products in An Giang, Dong Thap and Can Tho, covering 1,539 hectares of farmland.
A total of 69 farming households received insurance payouts after floods and extreme weather events in 2025.
A post-pilot survey found that 84% of participating farmers planned to continue purchasing agricultural insurance.
In green finance, the project worked with Tinh Thuong Microfinance Institution (TYM) to develop preferential loans for farmers adopting sustainable production models such as organic farming, solar energy use and livestock waste treatment.
So far, 882 farming households have accessed green loans, with total disbursements exceeding VND32 billion.
A digital credit scoring tool integrated into the TYM application has processed more than 100,000 loan applications and has been deployed in 13 provinces and cities, according to the project.
Project surveys showed that 98% of trained farmers reported improved awareness of climate risks, while 68% had adopted measures to reduce risks in agricultural production.
Le Duc Thinh, director general of the Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said the project reflected a shift from reliance on post-disaster aid toward more proactive risk management through agricultural insurance and green credit.
The AgriCRF-VN project is being implemented from 2024 to 2026 in Hanoi, Son La, Dong Thap, An Giang and Can Tho.
