HCMC – The People’s Committee of HCMC has approved a proposal by VinSpeed JSC to extend the planned high-speed metro line connecting the coastal commune of Can Gio and Ben Thanh Station in downtown HCMC, to improve network connectivity and efficiency.
The decision follows a meeting of the city’s task force assigned to review and resolve issues facing key infrastructure projects, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
Vingroup, VinSpeed’s parent company, has been tasked with studying the development of underground and public spaces around Ben Thanh Market to enhance transport links and support tourism and commercial activity in the city center.
The revised plan moves the starting point of the Can Gio metro line from Tan Thuan Ward (in former District 7) to Ben Thanh Station, allowing direct connection with Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien). The change will add about five kilometers to the route.
To limit land clearance costs, the section from Ben Thanh to Tan Thuan will run underground, while the stretch from Tan Thuan to Can Gio will remain elevated.
The city government has asked VinSpeed to coordinate with relevant agencies to update the route in the urban railway development plan and complete documents for submission to the appraisal council for investment approval and investor selection.
