HCMC – The Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL) has proposed reducing the standard workweek to fewer than 48 hours for the corporate sector, on par with the work hours at state administrative agencies.
The proposal was discussed at a conference on May 26, which reviewed the working relationship between the Government and the VGCL, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
In 2023, the Government and the VGCL actively collaborated to address employment, income, housing, and cultural needs for workers. It also implemented support policies for workers facing job cuts or underemployment due to decreased orders.
The VGCL urged the Government to prioritize labor rights and union activities when drafting laws. It called for extensive surveys and feedback from affected groups before passing new legislation.
The confederation requested regular inspections and strict penalties for companies violating labor laws. It also highlighted the issue of 206,000 workers without social insurance due to company closure or restructuring.
The VGCL asked the Government to address these cases with special policies to protect worker rights.
