HCMC – The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Alastair King, has visited Vietnam to promote cooperation in financial services, green finance, and the development of an international financial center (IFC).
The visit, organized by the British Embassy in Hanoi City, included meetings with senior Vietnamese officials, financial institutions, and business leaders.
King chaired the UK–Vietnam High-Level IFC Conference in the capital city on September 16, which brought together policymakers, regulators, and private sector representatives to discuss capital markets, legal frameworks, talent development, and innovation.
The event was attended by Standing Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Hoa Binh, Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Pham Tien Dung, Vice Minister of Finance Nguyen Duc Tam, Deputy Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Vietnam Nguyen Van Tien and leaders of HCMC and Danang City.
Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh called for continued UK support in introducing the IFC and attracting investment from London. King said the event provided an important platform for dialogue and reaffirmed the City of London’s commitment to sharing knowledge and experience.
Lord Justice Richard Snowden of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales also met with Le Minh Tri, chief justice of the Supreme People’s Court of Vietnam, to discuss legal frameworks for the IFC. Tri raised issues related to court procedures, language, and judge qualifications, and requested training support. Snowden reaffirmed the UK’s readiness to cooperate on developing specialised courts for the IFC.
The conference was part of a wider program marking 15 years of the UK–Vietnam Strategic Partnership. King said the two countries’ cooperation in green finance, fintech, and infrastructure would create new opportunities.
