HCMC – National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man will attend the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-152) in Turkey and pay an official visit to Italy from April 11 to 17, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Man and a high-level delegation will travel to Istanbul at the invitation of IPU President Tulia Ackson and Secretary General Martin Chungong. The visit will include bilateral activities in Turkey.

Vietnam’s National Assembly has been a member of the IPU since April 1979 and remains an active participant in the forum. Engagement in IPU activities supports multilateral parliamentary diplomacy, promotes national interests, and enables exchanges on global issues, the ministry noted.

The IPU, founded in 1889 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, has 181 member parliaments and 15 associate members. It serves as a platform for cooperation among legislatures worldwide, reported the Government news website (baochinhphu.vn).

Vietnam has held leadership roles within the IPU, including chairing the Asia-Pacific geopolitical group in 2006 and 2016 and the ASEAN+3 group in 2021. Its representatives have also served on the IPU Executive Committee and held vice-presidential positions.

The National Assembly has hosted major IPU events, including the IPU-132 Assembly in Hanoi City in 2015, which adopted the Hanoi Declaration on advancing parliamentary action toward sustainable development goals.

Relations with Turkey have developed since diplomatic ties were established in 1978. Bilateral trade reached nearly US$2.3 billion in 2025, including more than US$1.8 billion in Vietnamese exports. Turkey had 49 active investment projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of about US$1.75 billion as of December 2025.

Parliamentary exchanges between the two countries have continued through forums such as the IPU and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

Relations with Italy have expanded since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1973 and the upgrade to a strategic partnership in 2013. Two-way trade rose 6.2% year-on-year to about US$7.3 billion in 2025.

Italy is Vietnam’s third-largest trading partner in the European Union, while Vietnam is Italy’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. Italy had 167 active projects in Vietnam with registered capital of US$633.8 million.
