HCMC – Vietnam’s railway sector recorded a drop in passenger traffic during the Lunar New Year holiday, with ticket sales and revenue falling below last year’s levels, industry data showed.
Railway operators sold 434,205 tickets as of January 28, generating VND361 billion in revenue. This represented a 12% decline in the passenger volume and a 21% drop in the revenue compared to the previous year, according to the Vietnam Railway Corporation.
Online ticket purchases accounted for 58% of total sales. Operators began selling tickets on October 1, 2024, 15 days earlier than in 2023, but demand remained lower than in the previous year.
On Lunar New Year’s Eve, two special trains ran between Hanoi City and HCMC to cater to travelers seeking to mark the holiday in transit. These trains featured onboard activities throughout the journey.
Additional trains have been operating on the Hanoi-Haiphong route since the start of the holiday and will continue until February 2. These trains all start and end at Hanoi Station, with stops at Thuong Ly, Phu Thai, Hai Duong, Cam Giang, Gia Lam, and Long Bien.
