HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, July 11, confirmed 713 Covid-19 cases, with 707 cases infected locally and six imported, taking the day’s Covid-19 count to 1,953, the new record for the fourth straight day.
HCMC again took the lead in the case number this evening, at 354, followed by Binh Duong with 195 cases, Dong Thap with 50, Long An with 46 and Phu Yen with 32 cases
Eleven other provinces accounted for the rest, with each locality reporting less than 10 cases.
Of the total, 445 cases were found in quarantine centers or areas under lockdown, while the source of infection of 262 others remain unknown, including 171 cases in HCMC.
The new cases in HCMC sent the city’s Covid-19 count today to 1,397, also the most infections recorded in the city in a single day so far. Thus, its Covid-19 tally in the latest outbreak has reached 13,012, or roughly half of the country’s total.
Meanwhile, imported cases were found in Kien Giang, Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh and Ninh Binh.
Today, 71 patients were announced to have recovered from Covid-19.
The Ministry of Health this afternoon also reported four more Covid-19 deaths, including three suffering from underlying illnesses. They were all elderly patients, with two in HCMC and two in Dong Thap, raising the country’s total Covid-19 deaths to 116, including 81 in the latest Covid-19 wave.
One of the deceased in HCMC was a 79-year-old resident in District 5. He tested positive for Covid-19 on June 20 and was taken to the Cu Chi District Hospital.
On June 23, he was transferred to Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital and died on July 4.
The remaining case in HCMC was a 61-year-old woman in District 1, who had no underlying illnesses. She was found to be infected with Covid-19 on June 18 and was treated at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital. She died on July 5.
A Covid-19 death in Dong Thap was a woman, aged 61, in Sa Dec City. She was receiving medical treatment at the Sa Dec Hospital and died on July 5.
The remaining deceased was a 65-year-old man in Dong Thap’s Lai Vung District. He was being treated at the Sa Dec Hospital and died on July 6.
In related news, the HCMC Department of Health this afternoon held a meeting to discuss a plan to inject 1.1 million Covid-19 vaccine doses, which have been allocated by the Ministry of Health, for two-three weeks.
According to the municipal Center for Disease Control, the doses include one million Moderna doses donated by the United States through the Covax Facility and 100,000 Astra Zeneca doses presented by Japan.
The vaccine will be provided to vulnerable people and those in extremely-high-risk and high-risk areas, besides priority groups.
The city planned to run 630 vaccination sites in 312 wards and communes. Some 120 people are expected to be vaccinated at a site per day, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The HCMC Department of Health will also choose some hospitals meeting certain requirements to inject the vaccine to those suffering from chronic diseases and those at a high risk of Covid-19 infection.
The city will take full advantage of the social distancing period to conduct the vaccination program.
In HCMC, more than 991,300 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19, including 48,100 people having received two shots.
In Can Tho City, the municipal steering committee for Covid-19 infection prevention and control this afternoon decided to impose social distancing under the prime minister’s Directive 16 in its Ninh Kieu and Cai Rang districts for 15 days from 0 a.m. on July 12.
The remaining districts will practice social distancing in line with Directive 15.
The city had earlier detected a Covid-19 case, who is a resident of Cai Rang District and a trader at Tan An wholesale market in Ninh Kieu District.
According to the Can Tho Department of Health, the case’s infection source remains unknown and the number of direct and indirect contacts of the case is high. Therefore, the social distancing decision is necessary.
