HCMC – Tien Giang Province will extract 241,000 cubic meters of riverbed sand on the erosion site of Tan Phong Islet.

Pham Van Trong, vice chairman of the provincial government, announced the project to facilitate inland waterways by dredging in combination with exploiting sand.

Riverbed sand extraction can help partly compensate for the project to improve the waterway near Tan Phong Islet in Cai Lay District, Tien Giang Province, in 2022 and 2023.

It is calculated that some 241,000 cubic meters of sand will be exploited to partly cover the dredging cost.

The provincial government has tasked the Transport Department to join hands with relevant agencies to strictly oversee the process and promptly handle wrongdoings.

Tan Phong Islet used to cover an area of roughly one hectare, but it has now shrunk into a 30-meter-long and nine-meter-wide strip. The severe erosion is attributed to illegal sand exploitation.
