HCMC – Vietnam and Burundi on Friday held high-level talks in Hanoi to find ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and political relations.

Vietnamese President Luong Cuong today, April 4, presided over a welcome ceremony in honor of Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who is visiting the country from April 3 to 6. The visit marks 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The leaders reviewed cooperation and explored new areas for collaboration. They are expected to witness the signing of bilateral agreements.

Trade between the two countries reached more than US$2 million in 2024. Vietnam exports machinery and electronic components to Burundi and imports minerals and animal feed.

Vietnamese telecom firm Viettel has been operational in Burundi since 2013 through a joint venture. Its mobile service brand, Lumitel, was launched in 2015 and now holds the largest market share in the country. The company employs over 60,000 workers and contributes significantly to Burundian budget revenue.

The two countries have cooperated at the United Nations and other international forums. Both governments said they aim to deepen ties in areas including economics, trade, and development.
