HCMC – Vietnam demands China to respect its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said at a press briefing on March 7 after China announced drills in the East Sea.

The Hainan Maritime Safety Administration announced on March 4 the establishment of a no-go zone for Chinese military drills in the East Sea until March 15.

“Part of the area in China’s statement belongs to the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Vietnam as defined by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982),” Hang said.

“Vietnam always keeps a close watch on the developments in the East Sea and exercises its sovereignty, sovereignty rights and jurisdictions at sea in line with international law, especially the UNCLOS 1982,” she added.

Vietnam orders China to respect and not violate Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and not take actions to complicate the situation, thereby contributing to maintaining peace, security and stability in the East Sea.
