HCMC – Vietnam’s passport climbed five places to rank 86th globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, which tracks visa-free and simplified travel access, the index showed.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Vietnamese citizens can now access 49 destinations without a prior visa or with simplified entry procedures, including visa-free entry, visas on arrival, e-visas or electronic travel authorisations.

Of these, 24 destinations grant full visa-free access. They include ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia and Brunei.

Another 22 destinations allow visas on arrival, mainly in Africa and island states, including the Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Cape Verde and Comoros.

Three destinations—Kenya, Seychelles and Sri Lanka—require electronic travel authorisation, the index showed.

Most destinations offering easier entry for Vietnamese passport holders are in ASEAN and island economies.

Over the more than 20-year history of the Henley Passport Index, Vietnam’s highest ranking was 78th in 2006–2007. It ranked 79th in 2008–2009, 84th in 2010 and 81st in 2013–2014.

At the top of the 2026 index, Singapore retained the world’s strongest passport, while Japan and South Korea shared second place.
