HCMC – Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a brief meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 13th ASEAN–United States Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 26, reported the Government of Vietnam news website.

The ASEAN–U.S. Summit took place while Southeast Asian leaders are sitting down together in Kuala Lumpur for the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

Prime Minister Chinh conveyed an invitation by Party General Secretary To Lam and other senior Vietnamese leaders for President Trump to visit Vietnam. President Trump gladly accepted the invitation, expressing his strong interest and intention to arrange a visit to Vietnam at a suitable time.

Building on the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development between the two nations, PM Chinh proposed that the U.S. side facilitate a visit to the United States by Party General Secretary To Lam.

In response, President Trump asked the Vietnamese side to soon notify the U.S. government of the plan and expressed his hope that the Vietnamese Prime Minister would also visit America at a mutually convenient time.

During the meeting, both leaders agreed to further advance the comprehensive strategic partnership in a more substantive, effective, and result-oriented manner. They also discussed the early signing of a reciprocal trade agreement between the two countries, ensuring fairness and equality, while promoting greater U.S. investment in Vietnam.

Responding positively to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s proposals, President Trump acknowledged Vietnam’s request for recognition as a market economy and for removal from the U.S. strategic export control lists D1 and D3. He instructed senior U.S. officials attending the summit, including the Secretary of the Treasury and the U.S. Trade Representative, to promptly respond to these matters with their Vietnamese counterparts, said the Government news website (baochinhphu.vn).

On the same day, Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss the implementation of the Vietnam–U.S. Joint Statement on a fair and balanced reciprocal trade framework. And he also had a working meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Helberg to discuss bilateral trade relations and potential cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital technology, and supply chain partnerships, as well as the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in these fields.
