HCMC – The VND203-trillion Lao Cai–Hanoi–Haiphong high-speed railway project is slated to get off the ground in December this year and reach completion by 2030, according to the Lao Cai Province government.

At a conference held on April 11, the Lao Cai People’s Committee reported the progress of project preparations following the National Assembly’s approval of the investment policy under a resolution dated February 19, 2025.

The railway is expected to play a pivotal role in forming a modern transport corridor in northern Vietnam, strengthening domestic logistics capacity and cross-border trade connectivity with China.

The railway will span 390.9 kilometers, comprising a 385.8-kilometer main line from Lao Cai Station to Lach Huyen Port in Haiphong and a 5.1-kilometer connector section. An additional three branch lines with a combined length of nearly 28 kilometers will also be developed. The project needs a total of VND203.2 trillion, with more than VND35.7 trillion of it to be earmarked for land clearance and resettlement.

In Lao Cai Province, the railway will run approximately 65 kilometers through Lao Cai City and the districts of Bao Thang, Bao Yen, and Van Ban. The province will be home to two stations—Lao Cai Station (84 hectares) and Bao Thang Station (26 hectares)—and two technical operation hubs in Sa Pa and Van Ban, spanning 38 hectares and 24.2 hectares, respectively.

The project will require large-scale site clearance, impacting around 950 households and 91 industrial facilities located mainly in Pho Moi East Industrial Park and nearby clusters. To support resettlement and relocation work, Lao Cai plans to implement 20 sub-projects, including 16 residential resettlement areas and four technical infrastructure developments, with a total investment exceeding VND1.09 trillion.
