HCMC – Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday, August 8, according to local media reports.
This is the first phone call between Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and Russian President Vladimir Putin since Lam took up the new post of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee on August 3.
During the phone call, Putin congratulated Lam on his election as General Secretary of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and recalled good memories he got during his most recent visit to Vietnam.
He expressed his belief that Party General Secretary and State President To Lam will lead the Party, the State, and the people of Vietnam to even greater success in building the Party and developing Vietnam into a stronger and more prosperous nation.
In response, Lam sincerely thanked Putin and other Russian senior officials for having sent condolences and a delegation to the State funeral of the late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
He affirmed that Vietnam is consistent in pursuing its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and multi-lateralization and diversification of external relations.
Vietnam continues to strengthen and advance its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, considering the relationship with Russia one of the top priorities in its foreign policy.
He believed that the relations between Vietnam and Russia will continue to grow, bringing practical benefits to both nations and contributing to peace and development in the region and the world.
The two leaders concurred that cooperation between Vietnam and Russia has progressed effectively, yielding substantial results across various sectors, particularly in defense, security, energy, oil and gas, and trade.
To strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations more effectively and practically, the leaders discussed and agreed on several key directions for future cooperation within both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
Putin expressed eagerness to welcome Lam to Russia in the future.
On August 3, after Lam was elected as Party General Secretary, Putin sent a letter of congratulations, proposing a phone call to personally congratulate Lam on his election.
