HCMC – The ground-breaking ceremony of the first phase of the My Thuan-Can Tho expressway project was held in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long on January 4.

The project, some 23 kilometers in length, will run through the two Mekong Delta provinces of Vinh Long and Dong Thap. It will start from Tan Hoa Ward of Vinh Long City and end at Thuan An Commune of Binh Minh Town, both in Vinh Long.

The road project requires an investment of over VND4.8 trillion and will be implemented in two years. The road in the first phase will have four lanes with a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. It will be further expanded to six lanes, allowing vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

Addressing the ceremony, PM Phuc stressed that this is a strategic project that connects the My Thuan 2 Bridge in Vinh Long with Can Tho City. With the construction of this road, the HCMC-Trung Luong-My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway is scheduled to reach completion by 2022. This year, the Government had asked ministries and agencies to make preparations for the construction of an expressway stretching from Can Tho City to Ca Mau Province and the delta’s coastal expressway project with a total length of 400 kilometers.

The head of the Government added that many key projects under the country’s transportation development plan have been executed at this time. He stressed the need to complete the construction of the HCMC-Trung Luong-My Thuan-Can Tho expressway and the My Thuan-Can Tho section as pledged by investors.

The Government leader said that switching the investment format to public investment from build-operate-transfer is aimed at reducing costs for the delta, especially for products which are set to be exported in large volumes and transported through this expressway.

The Government had extracted some VND1 trillion from the State budget this year and an additional amount next year to complete the road. This has demonstrated the Government’s great efforts in promoting the comprehensive growth of the delta, he said.
