HCMC – Thundershowers, whirlwinds and flood tides over the past five days in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau have killed one person and pulled down or destroyed the roofs of over 1,700 homes.

The bad weather inundated 550 hectares of rice and plants, and submerged seven fishing boats, with total losses exceeding VND8.3 billion. The districts of Tran Van Thoi, Cai Nuoc and Dam Doi suffered the most damages, according to the provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control.

Yesterday afternoon, July 13, the province’s Party secretary, Nguyen Tien Hai, examined landslides at a coastal dike and the affected rice fields in Tran Van Thoi District.

The landslides hit three locations in Khanh Binh Tay Commune, with some 110 meters affected. The local competent forces have taken measures to reinforce the dike.

Hai also told the forces to help local residents repair their damaged homes and harvest rice.

In related news, in Kien Giang, another province in the delta, heavy rains and whirlwinds in recent days have damaged over 130 houses, submerged seven fishing boats, and seen two fishermen go missing, with total damages reaching an estimated VND7 billion.
