Australia supports Vietnam’s climate change adaptation

HCMC – Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong has announced AU$94.5 million in financial assistance for Vietnam to adapt to of climate change in the Mekong Delta.

The plan was unveiled at the Vietnam Australia Forum held in Hanoi on August 22 as part of Minister Wong’s official visit to Vietnam from August 21 to 24.

The forum, themed “Regional cooperation in a changing world,” was chaired by Minister Wong and Nguyen Xuan Thang, president of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and chairman of the Central Theoretical Council.

Minister Wong stated that this funding, with the implementation phase set to take place between 2023 and 2024, represents the joint efforts of Australia and Vietnam to address the shared issues of both countries, including climate change and energy transition.

She said Australia wanted to work with Vietnam to tackle challenges that both nations cannot manage individually.

Meanwhile, Thang highlighted that bilateral relations between Vietnam and Australia have solidified over the past 50 years. He expressed hope that the forum would provide a platform for officials and experts from both countries to discuss solutions to strengthen regional cooperation and enhance Vietnam-Australia ties.
