Border trade surges in early 2025

HCMC – Trade along Vietnam’s northern border has grown sharply so far this year, with total import-export revenue at the Mong Cai international border gate in Quang Ninh Province reaching US$624 million by the end of February, up by 58% from a year earlier.

Exports at Mong Cai have totaled US$424 million, while imports have stood at US$200 million, according to data from the border gate management board. Customs clearance procedures were completed for 578 businesses, an increase of 114 over the same period last year. Budget revenue from import-export duties reached VND281 billion, surging 78% year-on-year.

Cargo volume at Mong Cai and associated crossings has surpassed 300,000 tons, increasing 56.4% against the same period in 2024. Bac Luan II Bridge handled 15,000 trucks, rocketing 154% year-on-year, with a daily average of 294 trucks. Trade volume through this route exceeded 184,000 tons, an 83.7% surge.

At the Km3+4 Hai Yen border crossing, an average of 89 trucks transported around 2,100 tons of goods daily. Nearly 100,000 tons of exports passed through this route, more than twice the amount of the same period in 2024. Key exports included fruit, cassava starch, frozen seafood, and live aquatic products such as shrimp, crab, and fish.

In Lang Son Province, trade also expanded. By mid-February, total revenue at border crossings had reached US$8.3 billion, a 13% rise from the same period in 2024. Customs declarations at the province’s customs office totaled US$506.7 million.

Lang Son has five border checkpoints. On average, around 1,000 trucks passed through daily. After the Lunar New Year holiday, this figure rose to between 1,100 and 1,400 trucks per day. Huu Nghi and Tan Thanh border gates handled the most trade, including automobiles, machinery, consumer goods, chemicals, and fresh produce.

Huu Nghi processed 600-800 trucks daily. Export trucks ranged from 100 to 150 per day, while 500-650 carried imports. Trade volume at this border gate exceeded US$215 million.

Tan Thanh Border Gate handled over 10,000 customs declarations worth US$118 million, down by 22% from 2024. Exports have stood at US$41 million, while imports have reached US$77 million. Despite lower trade volume, customs revenue at Tan Thanh surged to VND111 billion, up by a hefty 972%.

At Chi Ma Border Gate, 20 export trucks and 100-110 import trucks were processed daily. Since the Lunar New Year holiday, trade revenue at Chi Ma totaled US$50 million, up by 13.7% from last year. Tax revenue from customs duties surpassed VND90 billion, up by 15% year-on-year.
