Five Grade 9 students from Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) have proudly won the “Best in Region” title for Southeast Asia & Pacific at the Cambridge Science Competition 2025 — an outstanding achievement in their very first year participating.
The team’s research on how varying concentrations of plastic-derived chemicals in soil affect the growth of two common vegetable species in Vietnam — with the goal of tackling plastic pollution and promoting sustainable agriculture — left a strong impression on the judging panel.
“This was a thoroughly impressive entry from Vietnam, showcasing both strong scientific skills and a genuine sense of curiosity and care,” said Mr. Charlie Pettit, Teaching Associate at the Faculty of Education – University of Cambridge and Head Judge of the Cambridge Science Competition.
He added, “The team demonstrated remarkable adaptability, responding thoughtfully to results that challenged their original hypothesis – an essential trait of real-world scientific thinking. These students exemplify the spirit of scientific inquiry – curious, adaptable and committed to making a difference.”
The journey also left a lasting impact on both the supervising teachers and all team members.
“They turned challenges into opportunities for growth and proved themselves as true young scientists,” shared Mary Hope M. Batlangao, PhD, Subject Lead of the Science Department and team supervisor.
“I’m proud to see my students embrace the true spirit of science through this competition. I’m thrilled to say they now understand that in science, nothing is wasted—everything leads forward,” added Mr. Shankar Goud Bollaram, team supervisor.
“This investigation gave us more than just a finished report. It taught us how real research feels, which is unorganised and annoying at times, but rewarding when things actually come together. These lessons have laid a strong base for our future paths in science, and we are proud of how each of us has worked hard and grown a lot during this remarkable journey,” the team said.
