HCMC mulls merging contracts to speed up Nguyen Khoai project

HCMC – HCMC is considering merging construction packages and requiring land clearance to be completed by June to accelerate the long-delayed Nguyen Khoai bridge and road project.

In a site inspection on March 18, Chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Van Duoc instructed relevant agencies to expedite procedures and complete land handover within the timeline, reported local media.

The project has been delayed for years. In late 2023, the city’s People’s Council revised its investment policy, setting an implementation period from 2016 to 2028.

Duoc said the project’s division into eight construction packages could complicate coordination, as multiple contractors could complicate coordination and affect overall progress.

He directed that the signed contracts remain unchanged, while undone packages be consolidated under a main contractor model to improve oversight and execution efficiency.

The Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Board of HCMC reported that if all land along Nguyen Khoai Street is cleared in the second quarter of 2026 and land on Ton That Thuyet Street is handed over in the fourth quarter, the project could be completed by mid-2028.

The project has total capital of around VND3.73 trillion, including nearly VND1.4 trillion for compensation, resettlement and infrastructure relocation, and about VND1.62 trillion for construction.

The main route spans about 1.16 kilometers, linking Hoang Trong Mau Street in Tan Hung Ward with Vo Van Kiet Avenue in Cau Ong Lanh Ward.

It includes an elevated road system connecting areas formerly in districts 7 and 1, crossing Te and Ben Nghe canals, with a total length of about 2.6 kilometers including branch bridges.

Additional works include upgrading and widening a section of Vo Van Kiet Avenue, along with drainage, lighting, green space, and traffic systems.
