Broken cargo ship poses oil spill risk

Must read

HCMC – A cargo ship named JAKARTA, which ran aground at Chuoi (Banana) Beach at the foot of the Hai Van Pass in central Thua Thien-Hue Province, broke in half as a result of heavy waves, leaving 300 tons of oil in the ship at risk of spilling into the sea, according to the provincial Maritime Administration.

Phan Thien Dinh, vice chairman of the provincial government, said that ships of the National Center for Oil Spill Response in the Central Region have travelled from the neighboring Danang City to the site to initiate response measures.

Competent forces discovered oil slicks around the grounded ship, but most of the oil stored at the nose of the ship has not yet spilled, the official added.

Earlier, the Office of the National Committee for Disaster Response and Search and Rescue on October 18 issued a dispatch on sending rescue forces and vehicles to the site to deal with a possible oil spill involving the JAKARTA ship.

The authorities of Thua Thien-Hue then worked out measures to prevent the risk of environmental pollution and mobilized resources to join the rescue efforts.

On October 10, local competent forces discovered that the JAKARTA ship flying the Taiwanese flag was battered by waves toward Chuoi Beach. The ship is some 70 meters long, 25 meters tall and 30 meters wide.
